The new Higher Education strategies, the increasing value of research in University Education and the guidelines adopted by the Instituto Superior de Ciências da Saúde Egas Moniz (ISCSEM) regarding formation, made key factors to the creation of the Centro de Investigação Interdisciplinar Egas Moniz - CiiEM, assumed as more embracing structure in terms of research areas.

The Egas Moniz Dental Clinic - EMDC is an associated laboratory of CiiEM in which the students perform pre and postgraduate training and tutored internships in the multiple areas of Dental Medicine.

The EMDC makes over 60 000 consults per year, almost 8 000 first appointments, providing an important service to the community at the same time being a center of immense potential for clinical research in Dental Medicine, in a close relationship with Biomaterials Laboratory of Egas Moniz.

The specificity of certain areas, within the scope of clinical research in Dental Medicine, imposes the creation of differentiated subunits. Thus, emerges the Egas Moniz Clinical Dental Research Unit – CDRU.
